چکیده

Light propagation in a cholesteric medium has been completely discussed by de Vries [2]. The main results are that, for a given frequency, there are two eigenvibrations with quasi-circular polarizations, except i) for high frequencies and ii) near the reflection band (for the vibration having total reflection), where the polarization is linear. Looking at light refracted by a cholesteric prism, we have found i) that there were four refracted beams for high frequencies and ii) that for any frequency the refracted beams had a circular polarization. Refraction of light by an oblique interface is discussed and we show that for any frequency except in the reflection band there are four circularly polarized refracted beams (and also four reflected beams). The relative intensities of refracted and reflected beams are given, and an anomaly is predicted near the reflection band for the vibration having not total reflection.

Method to make accurate measurements of refractive index

One of the important parameters used in optics is the refractive index. There are different methods to measure the refractive index in the visible region. One of the techniques used to carry out these measurements uses the method of minimum deviation that suffers a ray of light when crossing a prism. Other common methods are based on the determination of the critical angle and in the Brewster a...

Adaptive Spectral Mapping for Real-Time Dispersive Refraction

Spectral rendering, or image synthesis utilizing the constituent wavelengths of white light, enables the rendering of iridescent colors caused by phenomena such as dispersion, diffraction, interference and scattering. Dispersion creates the rainbow of colors when white light shines through a prism. Caustics, the focusing and de-focusing of light through a refractive medium, can be interpreted a...

Reflection, Refraction and the Prism

Huygens’ principle can be used to determine various experimentally verifiable and predictable behavior of the path of light through any optical system. However, as seen in the chapter on Light, the Huygens wavefront construction can be become complicated, especially in systems with a large number of optical components. A simpler approach to track the behavior of light is based on the propagatio...

Transmission of p- and s-polarized light through a prism and the condition of minimum deviation.

The condition of minimum deviation (MD) by a transparent optically isotropic prism is re-derived, and expressions for the intensity transmittances T(p)(theta) and T(s)(theta) of an uncoated prism of refractive index n and prism angle alpha for incident p- and s-polarized light and their derivatives with respect to the internal angle of refraction theta are obtained. When the MD condition (theta...

Effective index of refraction, optical rotation, and circular dichroism in isotropic chiral liquid crystals.

This paper concerns optical properties of the isotropic phase above the isotropic-cholesteric transition and of the blue phase BP III. We introduce an effective index, which describes spatial dispersion effects such as optical rotation, circular dichroism, and the modification of the average index due to the fluctuations. We derive the wavelength dependence of these spatial dispersion effects q...
